Photography

                                        Photography

'Photography is a method of recording images by the action of light,
or related radiation, on a sensitive material'

The first photograph made using the camera obscura was taken in France in 1827 by Joseph Nicephore Niepce. Initially, people would only use camera obscura for viewing purposes.
Niepce's photograph was created with eight hours of light exposure and would fade away shortly after appearing.

Louis Daguerre was experimenting to try and find a way to keep the image rather than having it disappear. It took another few years to succeed however he also managed to reduce the exposure time to less than 30 minutes. Eventually, Daguerre and Niepce worked together to improve this process.
They finally managed to do so by the help of a process which they called the daguerrotype.
This process quickly gained popularity and by the mid 1800's, there were 'over seventy' photography studios based in New York alone.

This new Photography process was a fascinating method of combining science and art. In 1879, photographers were hiring technicians in order to develop their photographs. The photography process continued to develop rapidly after the introduction of 'handheld cameras', making photography 'more accessible to the upper and middle classes'.

In the early 1940's, the invention of 'commercially viable colour film' was introduced, making photographs in colour possible and photography even more popular, accessible and also more affordable.

'From the moment of its invention, photography has dominated our modern world, changing our perception of technology, science and art.'
Nowadays, modern technology has completely transformed photography. Portable cameras are affordable by almost anyone in contrast to the first camera obscura which required a lot of money and an entire room for its process.

Anyone with even a phone app can nowadays create great images and share them really quickly so that they could be seen by people across the globe in no time.

'Photography has come to dominate our social lives, and allowed us to redefine our sense of self'.

The role of Photography has had a huge impact on the world and the way we live our lives. People use it as a method to record memories they could hold onto for a lifetime and also as a way to share and communicate what they perceive or find interesting around them. Photography is powerful enough to involve strangers in our life.
